Reuters: ~600,000 Nvidia H200s stockpiled in Hong Kong; Beijing still withholds large-scale mainland import approval. | China Day chinaday.news
Lianhe Zaobao (about 20:11) carried a Reuters exclusive saying people familiar with the matter reported that Beijing has still not approved large-scale imports of Nvidia's advanced AI chips, with about 600,000 H200 chips stored in Hong Kong awaiting shipment to the mainland despite strong demand from Chinese tech firms. China has allowed some chips in recent months—several major internet companies each obtained about 10,000 H200s—and small quantities moved via intermediaries, but large-volume mainland imports remain unapproved. The previously unreported stockpile size, Reuters said, reflects Beijing's reluctance to deepen reliance on US technology even as firms need Nvidia compute for AI demand; MIIT and NDRC did not comment, nor did Nvidia, Alibaba, ByteDance, DeepSeek or Tencent. Reuters also said that as of end-October an eight-H200 server quoted above 6 million yuan on the mainland, about triple a year earlier. The Business Times (Singapore) and The Standard (Hong Kong) among others carried the report. The Reuters piece circulated during 5 November; Zaobao's 20:11 pickup landed after the 20:00 close, so the morning open logs it.
